The guest leaves your site to book. Does measurement follow?
Many hotels use a booking engine on another domain. The website button starts the journey, but confirmation happens elsewhere. If measurement stops at the click, the report shows booking intent rather than completed reservations. Start by understanding what the provider supports.
Map the actual journey
List domains and stages: dates, availability, room, payment and confirmation. Mark where the team, booking engine or payment provider controls each page. Ask the supplier which integrations it supports and what confirmation information is available. That determines the plan; installing a tool on the main website is insufficient.
Check the handover between domains
GA4 cross-domain measurement requires configuration and information passing between participating destinations. Redirects or systems that strip parameters can interrupt it. In your hotel's test, observe departure and return journeys, including consent. Do not assume an engine embedded in a frame behaves like a page on your own domain.
Define events by their meaning
Availability searches, booking starts and confirmations explain different stages. A confirmed booking should correspond to a record recognised by the engine. Use a stable identifier and document whether the reported amount means the total, a deposit or another measure. Also decide how the commercial analysis handles cancellations and amendments.
- Availability search: an interest signal.
- Booking process started: closer intent.
- Confirmed reservation: a system-recognised outcome.
- Revenue assessed using consistent documented criteria.
Reconcile before increasing spend
Make test bookings using the provider's authorised procedure and label them for exclusion from commercial analysis. Compare each with hotel records and measured events. Investigate currency, value and duplication differences. Then assess campaigns by bookings while keeping unresolved attribution gaps visible.
Frequently asked questions
Does every booking engine support this?
No. Options vary by supplier, plan and embedding method. Confirm support before promising complete measurement.
Does the booking click become useless?
It remains useful for understanding interest and abandonment. Present it as one journey stage, separately from booking confirmation.
